Slow And Steady Growth
November 4th, 2008It amazes me to see how many people believe that “if it doesn’t happen quickly (on the internet) it ain’t going to happen at all”. They jump into a business with full force putting everything they have into it, then, when they begin to run out of money and energy and still haven’t gotten the desired results they quit.
It reminds me of the story of the tortoise and the hare. Have you ever read that story?
In the story the tortoise is challenged to a race with the hare.
Because the hare is faster it seems that he will surely be the winner. When the race begins the hare quickly out paces the tortoise and moves to the lead position. After a while he gets tired and decides to take a nap. When he wakes up from his nap he gets distracted and begins to play with the animals around him. Eventually he remembers he’s supposed to be in a race and heads towards the finish line…
The tortoise enters the race knowing that he’s not as fast as the hare. He doesn’t expect to win the race. For him the challenge is to reach the finish line. He selects a steady pace that is easily sustainable so he won’t tire out. He stays focused on what he’s trying to achieve so that he doesn’t get distracted. By keeping this steady pace and staying focused, for what seems like a very long time, he finally sees the finish line in front of him…
The tortoise expects to see the hare waiting at the finish line ready to taunt him for not winning the race. Once he crosses the finish line he is pleased that he accomplished his goal… but where is the hare?
… By the time the hare caught sight of the finish line he knew it was already too late to win. So he quit and went home. He never even finished the race.
What has this got to do with traffic exchanges or a traffic exchange directory?
Simply this…
When you become the proud owner of a traffic exchange make sure you can manage it for the long haul. Set your own pace. Set your own goals. Don’t try to keep up with the competition - study them - admire them - improve upon them. Be different. Don’t be a hare!
Be like the tortoise. Run your own race one step at a time - with courage, faith, and determination. In the end you will find that crossing the finish line is the most magnificent and spectacular reward you could ever imagine.
